From Nikos Kazantzakis, we often only know the novel Alexis Zorbas, which was adapted for cinema. However, this author, born in Crete under Ottoman rule, is one of the greatest Greek thinkers of the 20th century. A writer of novels, short stories, plays, and essays, he was a student of Bergson and discovered Nietzsche, whose philosophy inspired him throughout his life. He was also nourished by the figures of Christ, Buddha, and Lenin.

Nikos Kazantzakis found himself crossing paths with great History many times. An eyewitness to the Russian Revolution and the two great wars of the 20th century, he decided from 1920 to travel the world. His journey, which would be interrupted in the year of his death in 1957, would lead him to Austria, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, the Middle East, England, Japan, and finally China.
